International Women's Day

Updated: Apr 20

We want to celebrate IWD 2025 with one of our very relevant articles from the past 'Suffrajitsu–A Martial Art for Women' by Paul Budden here.

The article is an extract focusing on Edith Garrud (1872–1971), the founder of Saffrajitsu, who taught many young women the self-defence techniques, appeared in the London Sketch on July 6, 1910, with the headline "throwing a uniformed British policeman", showcasing her ability. She capitalised on the considerable media interest in her classes to highlight women's vulnerability in Edwardian England.

We celebrate all the women in and surrounding budo, making successes, supporting others, being the role model, or persevering and following the path.
